Frequently asked questions

Should I choose Cat6 or Cat6A?

Cat6 handles gigabit internet and most home needs very well. Cat6A supports higher speeds over longer distances and is a good choice if you want extra headroom for the future. We'll recommend the right cable for your space when we quote the job.

Can you run Ethernet in a finished home?

In most homes, yes. We route cable through the attic, walls or other existing pathways to keep the install clean. We'll confirm the best route for your home during the estimate.

How much does it cost to add Ethernet ports?

Residential Ethernet starts at $200 per run, and additional runs are discounted when installed together. Your quote will list the exact number of runs and the total price before any work starts.

Will a wired connection really help my gaming or video calls?

Yes. A wired connection avoids Wi-Fi interference and congestion, which usually means lower latency, fewer dropouts and more consistent speeds for gaming, streaming and video calls.

How long can an Ethernet cable run be?

A standard Ethernet cable run works reliably up to about 328 feet (100 meters). Most homes are well within that. For longer distances, such as a detached building, we can add a switch partway or use another method, and we'll recommend the right one during your estimate.

What is the difference between Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6A?

All three carry gigabit speeds. Cat6 handles faster speeds over shorter distances, and Cat6A is built to carry 10 gigabit speeds over the full 328 feet, with thicker cable that is more resistant to interference. Cat6 is a good fit for most homes. Cat6A suits offices, home labs and anyone planning for the future. We install Cat6 and Cat6A.

Where should I put Ethernet jacks in my home?

The most useful spots are the home office, behind the TV or media area, the gaming setup, and the ceiling or wall locations for Wi-Fi access points and security cameras. We walk through your home with you, look at where your modem or router lives, and recommend jack locations that fit your space.

Will Ethernet make my internet faster?

Ethernet gives you the full speed of the internet plan you pay for, with lower lag and fewer dropouts than Wi-Fi. It can't make your plan faster than what your provider delivers. If a wired connection is still slow, the plan or the modem is usually the cause, and we can help you spot that.

Do you install Ethernet and cabling for businesses and offices?

Yes. We install office cabling, workstation drops, network racks and structured cabling. Business projects are quoted individually after a free site survey, and you receive a clear written proposal. Learn about business networking.
